چکیده

We present a simple and efficient anisotropic generalization of the semi-isotropic (twointegral) axisymmetric Jeans formalism which is used to model the stellar kinematics of galaxies. The following is assumed: (i) a constant mass-to-light ratio M/L and (ii) a velocity ellipsoid that is aligned with cylindrical coordinates (R, z) and characterized by the classic anisotropy parameter βz = 1 − v z/v 2 R . Our simple models are fit to SAURON integral-field observations of the stellar kinematics for a set of fast-rotator early-type galaxies. With only two free parameters (βz and the inclination) the models generally provide remarkably good descriptions of the shape of the first (V ) and second (Vrms ≡ √ V 2 + σ) velocity moments, once a detailed description of the surface brightness is given. This is consistent with previous findings on the dynamical structure of these objects. With the observationally-motivated assumption that βz ∼ 0, the method is able to recover the inclination. The technique can be used to determine the dynamical mass-to-light ratios and angular momenta of early-type fastrotators and spiral galaxies, especially when the quality of the data does not justify more sophisticated modeling approaches. This formalism allows for the inclusion of dark matter, supermassive black holes, spatially varying anisotropy, and multiple kinematic components.

Kinematic constraints on the stellar and dark matter content of spiral and S0 galaxies

We present mass models of a sample of 14 spiral and 14 S0 galaxies that constrain their stellar and dark matter content. For each galaxy we derive the stellar mass distribution from nearinfrared photometry under the assumptions of axisymmetry and a constant KS-band stellar mass-to-light ratio, (M/L)KS . To this we add a dark halo assumed to follow a spherically symmetric Navarro, Frenk & White ...

Evaluation of New MOND Interpolating Function with Rotation Curves of Galaxies

The rotation curves of a sample of 46 low- and high-surface brightness galaxies are considered in the context of Milgrom's modi_ed dynamics (MOND) to test a new interpolating function proposed by Zhao et al. (2010) [1] and compare with the results of simple interpolating function. The predicted rotation curves are calculated from the total baryonic matter based on the B-band surface photometry,...

Dynamical modelling of stars and gas in NGC 2974: determination of mass-to-light ratio, inclination and orbital structure by Schwarzschild’s method

We study the large-scale stellar and gaseous kinematics of the E4 galaxy NGC 2974, based on panoramic integral-field data obtained with SAURON . We quantify the velocity fields with Fourier methods (kinemetry), and show that the large-scale kinematics is largely consistent with axisymmetry. We construct general axisymmetric dynamical models for the stellar motions using Schwarzschild’s orbit-su...

Recovering the intrinsic shape of early-type galaxies

We investigate how well the intrinsic shape of early-type galaxies can be recovered when both photometric and two-dimensional stellar kinematic observations are available. We simulate these observations with galaxy models that are representative of observed oblate fastrotator to triaxial slow-rotator early-type galaxies. By fitting realistic triaxial dynamical models to these simulated observat...

The mass distribution of dwarf spheroidal galaxies from stellar kinematics: Draco, Ursa Minor and Fornax

We model three dSph galaxies, Draco, Ursa Minor and Fornax, as axisymmetric stellar systems embedded in spherical dark-matter potentials, which are in dynamical equilibrium without significant external tidal forces. We construct non-parametric twoand three-integral models that match the observed surfacedensity profiles and the current kinematic samples of∼ 150−200 stars per galaxy; these models...
